Juan Soto has agreed to the richest contract in professional sports history, a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets, eclipsing Shohei Ohtani's record from last winter.
So imagine being a Pirate fan knowing that baseball is broke unless you live in a big city with an owner with deep pockets.
We will never see the Pirates be competitive because as soon as talent comes to their second contract they will leave for more green.
Baseball sucks because of it.
All those people screaming about the price of eggs will soon be paying hundreds for tickets to watch men hit a ball with a stick and run around a diamond.
How about the cost of seats in lower level between the dugouts How much for a family of 4 on a summers night To me bad for the game on this signing and yrs of the contract Value of his numbers in yrs 8-15 vs what he is paid will not match his yrs 1-7 of the contract Been a Mets fan since 1062
What sport is?
An MLB season is 162 games long. They sometimes play 2 games in one day (not as often as before). On average, they get one day off a week.
The Jays were never in serious contention. It was always coming down to the New York teams and the number was always going to be in the 700s. The Jays weren’t needed for leverage.
All of this to play in a division with the Phillies and Braves and then to get bounced in the playoffs by the Dodgers 🤣 Mets hardly have a rotation behind Senga and Petersen and LA’s slotting Kershaw and Gonsolin as their #5 and #6. Money would’ve been better spent in the AL.
JUAN SOTO’S PAY PACKAGE IS OBSCENE! Soto will be making around $72,000/plate appearance (~700/season) and $315,000/game!! Baseball is a legal monopoly, and this autocratic sports regime can collapse over the span of days like a Middle Eastern dictatorship. #Boycott_Baseball. 1/2
Does anyone believe the economics of professional sports are sustainable? We all pay for it either directly and willingly or indirectly and unwillingly with whatever linear pay TV package we subscribe to. There is virtually no interest in this sport among younger Gen Y or Gen Z Americans. 2/2
“Dictatorships (MLB baseball) also fail because they run out of money. They can't steal enough from the state (fans, broadcast rights) to pay loyalists (players), wind up relying on narcotics trade ($40 for beer+hotdog) & then their soldiers (fans) stop fighting (watching).” https://bsky.app/profile/anneapplebaum.bsky.social/post/3lcu6vj72zs24

…you're hard pressed to spend $100 on 2 tickets/food/beer/parking. Every minor league guy on the field & their teams go out of their way to make it a fun experience.

It’s better now than it will be when he is 41, still earning a salary even if he hasn’t played well in ten years. The 15 years for an athlete is far more shocking than the $51M
Good, now that’s out of the way. I don’t blame him. World record sports deal and generational wealth? … sure I’ll play for the shit ass Mets any day. Money over glory wins nearly every time.
Obscene. This is why families cannot afford to go to ballgames. How in the world does one play enough to even come close to earning that amount?
Disgusting.
much like i did with my elders and bobby bonilla, my great grandkids will come to me in july of 2093 and ask “grampy, what is juan soto day?” and i will say “gather round children, for i have a tale to tell about the history of the new york mets”
Mets fan here: Considering Steve Cohen is the richest billionaire owner in baseball & not unfamiliar with breaking securities laws, when a formerly poor man like Soto manages to squeeze three-quarters of a billion dollars out of a tainted billionaire it makes me happy in my special place.
Oh, it's a TERRIBLE deal, but I'm used to my Mets doing that. If I let this stuff bother me I would've had a stroke when they thought Verlander & Scherzer could anchor a rotation year before last!
Great playing skills, but there is no I in team. Seems Billionaire owners are decimating any chance of a level playing field, and the Commissioner is fine with it, he's their boy! Like politics, Pro Sports are "Off the Boil!"
No one in the world should earn that amount of money, look where it’s got us! Spread the earnings to the poor and disadvantaged! There needs to be a cap!
Oh God! I never read into the fine print. 1.2 Million for 25 years instead of a one time 5.9 million? Thats one of the stupidest management decisions I’ve ever heard about.
Homers are going to be hard to come by playing at home. Sure he’ll still have a decent RBI number but I’m not sure he’ll hit 40 HR a year playing as a Met. Yankee Stadium was well suited to make him a HOF player.
I don't know WTF "on base" is but I know, it doesnt justify money he's gonna get for it.
President of the USA salary is $400,000 in 2024, not $51 mil a year to run around chasing a ball. The same goes to other crazy salaries in sports & entertainment.
Enough already or The Adjusters will act often
Okay I was a lil upset but $765 million on a 15 year deal.... yeah sorry the yankee now have the ability to address rotation, bullpen, and in depth now. Soto is a great hitter don't get me wrong but this shows me he wanted a bigger paycheck than Ontani and nothing else.
Nice for him I suppose. Look, our society's priorities are badly f*cked up. We'll pay countless millions to athletes and leave our frontline workers in the public service sectors barely make it paycheck to paycheck.
As a life long Met fan I am happy to get Juan Soto on our team. However, the amount of money and the 15 year term seems like a potential financial liability. I assume the Mets have insurance on Soto in case he get injured over the next 15 years.
Baseball is a dying sport. 24-28 teams are just farm teams for the big teams. It is becoming like society. Might as well just have the LA and New York teams play in the world series every year. I am done with the sport. #Bluejays
He will make a little over $72,000 every time he walks to the plate next year. I’m an avid sports fan and I love baseball. This is the embarrassing part of the game.
Why’s it lame? People complain about player salaries, but if the players aren’t getting the money, the owners are…but the players are actually doing the thing that people want to see.
No problem with players making huge amounts of money, they are the reason we watch the game. A much bigger problem with the owners making obscene amounts of money, then citizens taxes building their stadiums. If more money for players means less money for the billionaire class, pay them even more!
Yes they do. There is no salary cap so owners can spend whatever they want. These owners are billionaires. All of them have the money to spend if they wanted to. Most of them just choose not to because they are cheap. Well if you're cheap then you can't compete.

He isn't selling.
It would be nice if he sold and maybe a group of local investors buy but not gonna happen.

Way overpaid
I knew we weren't going to keep him.
That dude is something. He will be missed.
I'd be happy at $7,400.
That’s 143 bucks a week.
Hey, I got a sarcasm filter for sale, you interested?
Well, only time will tell.
Good, now that’s out of the way. I don’t blame him. World record sports deal and generational wealth? … sure I’ll play for the shit ass Mets any day. Money over glory wins nearly every time.
Disgusting.
Last season it was Ohtani deferring practically his entire 700 million dollar contract.
The market allowed this.
Soto is a generational talent.
Right place right time.
Don’t hate cause he got paid.
#LGM tho’
No married individual either.
Salaries are out of control.
SMH
I will say it again, professional sports contracts should never exceed 5 years , for any sport.
and, yes, it’s horrible for the market.

He’s got a great bat (for now), but that’s about it. Otherwise (defense, running, etc), average.
Who’s next?
