Except payroll has never been the issue, it's more of a combination of too much loyalty to underperforming coaches and some conviction on Monfort's part that he knows more about the game than he actually does.

Bud Black is a respected baseball man, and deserves better than this. He may not be the right manager for this team, but I struggle to think who might be. When you have that owner and GM combo there are no easy answers
