I didn't know that. Was it the same paper, or did you have to sit an extra paper (like when SATS used to have an extension paper)?

I never took it.
It was a separate exam. The syllabus for it covered extra material. My chem teacher taught us A level students bits of S level syllabus because he thought it was interesting.
I only heard about it for Chemistry.
My school was a Comprehensive, & pupils in my year & above would have joined when it was still a Secondary Modern school, having "failed" our 11 plus exams. The available A levels were tailored to that demographic, I suspect, hence no Further Maths or S levels.

The 1967 S paper is particularly brutal!
1) On blue paper;
2) In an intimidating font.
It made it all seem more "heavyweight" than usual.
