Since this is probably about to be relevant: a reminder that when you poll the general public, they estimate NASA to be between 10-30% of the federal budget. It's less than 1%. All that amazing science and technology and wonder is got for less than a penny on the dollar of your taxes.

All that practical use that came out of space research fueled businesses and innovations of all kinds. Paying back so many dividends.
Those jobs, however, will also go away as the federal employees and the programs they’re working on go away.
So technically they’re slapping the private sector with layoffs as well.
I feel like you'd probably get something like
Medicare/medicaid: 40
Food Stamps: 20
NASA: 30
Gov. worker salaries: 40
Welfare Queens (🙄): 60
Defense: 75
For every $1 invested into NASA there is a $6 ROI.

not much different than how people who can't walk but stand from their wheelchairs and blind folk who can see light and colours aren't depicted anywhere, leading to the usual accusations of fakery and mooching
Tho this doesn't really disagree with your point either
