Thinking about borrowing this from @sethcotlar.bsky.social for my syllabus.

This is the language I put on all of my syllabi this year regarding the use of AI. At this point I don't see any reason to change it.

This year I taught two courses entirely on paper: no PDFs, no Turnitin, no class website. I handed out old-fashioned comp books on the first day and required students to keep notes on readings and on discussions (especially on what their peers said, not just what I said). We had FUN and they WROTE.

This is the way! We need to foreground reading and writing (by hand) as things that are difficult but ultimately deeply pleasurable, like learning a musical instrument or going for a long bike ride.

Many students filled or nearly filled 200 pages, and several nearly filled TWO comp books. Discussions were so lively I had to bring in my old Faculty Senate gavel to keep order. Final assignment: reread your journal, flag the three smartest entries and combine/rewrite into your final statement.

I hope so. One of the courses is “The Constitution and the Presidency,” in which I tried to pitch the journal as creating your own notebook of facts and informed opinions about the topic.
