European leaders should start to create a European army in response to Russia's military build-up, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said today at the Munich Security Conference.

If Pres Zelenskyy is proposing a European army, NATO may already be impotent. I'm still hoping that Mark Rutte will demonstrate leadership, and show he's not a concierge. Willing NATO members should send troops to fight with Ukraine. My proposal on Substack: https://edsolomon.substack.com/p/a-proposal-to-end-russias-war-against
Europe went to all the wars USA and UK "decided on". All of Europe combined far outspends USA and would be independent if not forced to buy exclusively american military equipment.
When you go to bed with a bully, don't be surprised that you get screwed, I guess? Let's see what EU's next move is.
Interesting take. What’s your source for EU outspending the U.S. on defense? I don’t think we’re necessarily forced to buy American arms—interoperability & tech often drive that. In any case, true autonomy needs defense integration and I hope EU Member States realize that sooner rather than later!
USA NATO cost sharing is 15%. Simple maths says the other 85% is not USA - so it must be Europe.
Europe is stuffing itself with Raytheons and Lockheed Martins, I was not in the room when the deals were signed to be certain that they were picked "freely".
The deals are signed, autonomy has to wait.
NATO cost-sharing and defense budgets can be complex, so I found these charts helpful for context. While Europe does buy U.S. equipment, there’s also significant investment in homegrown defense industries. Autonomy is evolving, let’s see where it leads.
Have to now. Not an EU one, that is a bureaucracy with little inertia and too much infighting.
One that respects east to west European input with zero obfuscation.
And Canada 🇨🇦would likely want to be a part of that.
People forget that Russia is closer to Canada than anyone would like. And the US is telling us and the world quite clearly that we can no longer depend on them.
So, it’s time we start looking for an alternative to NATO
Zelenskyy is right: Europe needs its own army. Trust in the U.S. as a reliable ally is eroding by the day, and Putin isn’t slowing down. A strong, united EU defense is the only way to ensure security and sovereignty. Time to step up! #EuropeanArmy #MunichSecurityConference #Ukraine
We have an EU🇪🇺 Full of False Sovereignists who Typhoon and are Sponsored by Russia 🇷🇺 of Putin the first and Viktor Orbán and Slow down all the Processes
The so-called ‘sovereigntists’ will soon face their reckoning. When trade tariffs start hitting where it hurts, they’ll realize selling out to Putin comes at a cost. Europe won’t keep funding those who sabotage its security.
They certainly are, but popular support can only take them so far. The real turning point will be the economy—when the costs of their choices hit hard, they’ll have no option but to adapt. Losing power is their greatest fear, and economic decline might force their hand.
US is no longer an ally & remains in NATO only for its big juicy contracts.
FIRST PRIORITY:Take US troops out of EU,they are no longer NATO but rather an army under the orders of a fascist, Trump & therefore a risk for EU.
Now US troops is like having Russian soldiers on EU soil.
The idea of a European Army stems from the 50s. It was thought of as unnecesary because NATO existed. With that alliance supposingly coming to an end, a European army is relevant again. Just like anything else that will consolidate European power.
As long as you as you have Depot murdering countries like Russia North Korea China you must maintain a strong military
The current state of affairs here in the United States with Nazis in charge who will be dealt with not soon enough
Europe needs to look to defending themselves
European leaders should invite Ukraine to join the common security and defence policy (CSDP) now, ahead of EU accession.
They could also invite UK to join once it rejoins EEA, as is vital anyway to reset trade. Then UK too could play a significant role in securing Europe after Trump’s Putin deal.
Europe is a diverse group of nations.
But an army formed in defense of democracies could be created with its basis in Europe.
Other nations like Canada, South Korea and Australia should be allowed to join as well.
Military interests are complex in the world today, and new alliances may be required.
If Europe creates a military alliance, it must learn from its past alliance mistakes. There must be a mechanism to remove a member of the alliance. A country that is continuously a thorn in the alliances side should not ruin the alliance or impede majority action.
Ah, the good old days...when the EU and NATO were bulwarks against Russian expansion and the leading western nations weren't either run by fascists or being threatened by them.
Agreed this must be a priority for our European leaders, American influence as waning
And Putin will take full advantage, and we will be caught between there own agendas
Let me think.. coup in 2014, ethnic cleansing of Russian minority in Donbas, refused negotiations in 2022.
I am deaf to what this person has to say. Europe should not agree to any demands by any side.
It's a way to provide security guarantees without necessarily abandoning existing structures, while also allowing Ukraine to be a member. I'm all for it. Europe won't be able to rely on anyone for its security and urgently needs to adapt
