Also, the EU treaty says that any "European state" may apply to join, not a "state in Europe", so you could quite easily argue that Canada is European in terms of its general characteristics as a country and a state.

Difficult but definitely more a values and economic match than 2 current members and 2-3 other candidates that should basically never be let in. Canada would be good for us. And good for them. But could never be Schengen, bc US border.

I doubt very much that Canada will join the EU. But — perhaps an arrangement similar to Norway. More importantly, now is the time to dislodge, economically (and militarily), from the U.S. as swiftly as possible. They are alienating the rest of the world. Now live with the consequences. Isolation.

Yeah, I'd look into EEA membership. That's the European Economic Area.

EFTA, which Norway is a member of, is a big commitment. Too big for the UK or Switzerland.

For Canada, I would suggest an association agreement which is, normally, a step towards EU membership which integrates it into the EU economy and so on, an from there Canada could choose whether to pursue full membership or stick with the Association Agreement. 1/2

EFTA is an more of an end station than a stopover as EFTA is not an EU entity, it is a separate organization that has a trade agreement with the EU. An AA could also more easily allow for ad hoc agreements like Canadian participation in Europol and Frontex, the EU police and border institutions. 2/2

The EU should certainly its rhetoric of its values based union centered around liberal democracy and human rights. United by values rather than forced togetherness borne by geography, I do not see why we should not be open to sign Canada up

If Canada was to get serious about EU membership, it'd need to look into what external borders of the EU are like in the British Isles, in the southern tip of Spain, at the Finno-Russian border...

The EU doesn't have any external borders in the British Isles. Its borders in that part of Europe and in Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark. Obviously the only land border there is Ireland's border with the UK.

I would say yes and no. My experience so far is this: Canadians are positive towards the idea of joining the EU, some MAGA-style goofball tries to scare them by lying about how the EU works, Canadians take a breather, I explain how things actually work, and they are back to being positive. 😎 🇪🇺 🇨🇦

You're either in or you're out.

Membership is a serious commitment to EU standards, rules, and regulations. If the USA doesn't comply with EU standards too, that's the end of the North American common market.

For Canada free trade with the USA is the low hanging fruit and there will be incredible temptation in three years to hope that the new occupant of the White House will go back to the old way of business. But I think Carney is right and the old way is gone even if there are reverses in the future

A number of European states are members without having adopted the Euro. Canada could join a number of the EEC system initiatives without actually becoming a member itself.
