Up to now I'd say FPTP has allowed extremist parties such as reform to be kept safely at bay. But public mood has changed and the parties have started to overcome that huge barrier. A change of system that encourages coalitions is probably needed at this point.

No; Reform’s “policies” (if you can call them that) are the antithesis of what the vast majority of what the UK population want; destroying the NHS, privatising public services, etc. At the moment Reform relies on the cult of personality with Farage, & the protest vote. That only gets you so far.
