I believe they are often bots. There have been a flood of new accounts that seem to exist only to drag down the level of discourse. Many of these either have no followers or only bit followers, and they're relentlessly negative (and their statements sound like AI).

I have a raunchy username, I’m far left, I’m an older guy, and I enjoy restrained trolling. I really can’t tell you why people like me pop in to troll, but if I were self-aware enough to know why I feel compelled to troll, I probably wouldn’t do it in the first place.
