bathroom bills were considered a hugely bigoted overreach a decade ago and the backsliding on trans rights is the result of a sustained propaganda campaign by elites

the pendulum can swing back the other way if you try, and anyone who is not willing to do so is showcasing their own bigotry

Looks pretty clear that what changed was the trans-in-sports debate. Voters were supportive of bathroom rights (it’s a privacy issue, everyone needs the bathroom, etc). Voters don’t feel the same way about sports (it’s already exclusive, included clear gender roles, etc).

We can see the same trend with DEI backlash. Voters are very supportive of equal opportunity, but as soon as you say you’re putting the thumb on the scale for one group or another you lose support. (What about white privilege? It hasn’t been an explicit policy position, unlike DEI)

I think that politicians and liberal activists should have tried to steer that conversation away from sports and back to discrimination & workplace protection where public opinion is more favorable

No, sports are not already exclusive. Outside of the fringe of the fringe, sports is essentially just people having fun with their friends. And in many cases on explicitly coed teams! Why can the govt tell me who I’m allowed to hang out with and how?

Disagree, not everyone is allowed to participate in competitive high school or college teams. There are frequently gender, weight and skill requirements. I don’t think this debate was ever about club teams. If it was I think voters would have been more sympathetic for exactly the reasons you wrote.

That’s just false. Sports have restrictions; tryouts, weight classes, dress codes, there are male and female teams. Not everyone has been allowed to compete in whatever they want.

You can’t just give up one right and expect to keep all others. If you acquiesce on sports, that is a tacit admission that trans women are not women. And if trans women are not women when it comes to sports, why would the public treat them as women when it comes to bathrooms. See how that works?
