Maybe I just don’t remember it but I don’t think there was ever a corresponding trend of articles about conservative parents cutting off their gay kids, which was a thing that absolutely happened en masse in the 90s and aughts as gay culture mainstreamed

The framing is always from the parent's perspective, which underlines that the real anxiety is actually the inverse. "The parent may actually have to die with this on THEIR conscience and that terrifies me, a parent."

Which is to say- no. It never became any sort of thing at all that parents were kicking kids out/making their lives so miserable they had to leave.

If it was talked about at ALL it was- when you’re in ur parent’s house you live by their rules. Or if the person was a little more emphatic, it was ‘it really sucks it’s like this and I hope they come around. But when u live in ur parents house, u have to live by their rules.’

There was an undercurrent in the queer communities that saw them writing and organizing in community recognizing- oh hey this is happening, what are we going to do, let’s start a house for these kids to escape to!

And frankly- to get random on you all for a minute, it made more sense then that it does now for the press to not give a shit about kids being kicked out. The press at that time would’ve been the kids of parents or people themselves that had been abandoned thru Great Depression and orphan trains.
