(Thread) Christian Nationalism hit my community this past week as a School Board member proposed mandating prayer at meetings. In response, Pam Escobar powerfully advocated for all students’ 14th Amendment protections to Religious Freedom.

Not surprisingly, her message (roughly 15 mins.) was selectively edited to fit rightwing narratives. While Republicans on the Board tie up staff’s time writing a bill with clear Constitutional ramifications, here’s what they’re not addressing…
-A district with an $11M budget shortfall, including $3M at the Special Needs level.
-The 10th fastest growing county currently receiving the 2nd least local funding of all 115 counties Statewide. In a state that currently ranks 48th Nationally, per pupil, or 30% below the national average.
Important to note, nobody is saying people can’t practice their beliefs at a place of worship or even a private school of one’s choosing. However, the Public School System is not a proper venue and, if it becomes one, we must move forward with taxing the churches!
I say all this, even living in the “Bible Belt”, because once we let any issue slip as not worthy of fighting comparative to others, we’ve conceded power outlined by our Constitution. In a time of Christofascism, instead #BelikePam
The fact that the person who proposed this pointed out that “they ran as a Christian” and then tries to abuse her position of authority to inflict her religion on the public is just obscene.
I ❤️ Ms. Escobar: "If you want to pray with them, take them to church. You want to be evangelical and do that? Go for it. But not on my time, not on their time and not on this community’s time.”
I appreciate her courage and her message.
Religious invocations at public proceedings are offensive.

Salvation can't be legislated.
