as a black belt in jiu jitsu I can say that as far as self defense in this sense goes, these sorts of lessons are far more important than learning to clinch or make space effectively. just like just shooting your AR-15 a lot won't make you an effective soldier in practice
Folks are making a common mistake here: this is CBP. If you answer them, they let you go. If you ask to speak with a lawyer, you make yourself more suspicious.
These are not cops, they're customs, and this has existed long before this.
They arr a far more dangerous ballpark if they have pulled you in to a secondary interview. City and state Copa don't have the power to put you on no fly lists. Don't assume these aren't cops, very dangerous cops.
The one huge thing Hasan has going for his is they very likely had an idea who he was and that semifame is a massive privilege that most others would not be able to lean in to if needed.
"Am I being Detained?"
If Yes "I'd like to speak to a lawyer" and shut up.
Strong disagree on this one. We want citizens who have no risk of deportation to keep border patrol busy for hours. That means ten noncitizens they aren't harassing and who are in risk of being denied entry. Border patrol is not the cops.
Yeah, they have years of training in how to get people to talk. Hasan has years of training in talking. I can imagine it would be pretty hard to say “I’m not saying anything to you without a lawyer present” and shutting up
He gets a pass. He dared them to ship him to Louisiana and they backed off. I can totally also see a guy like de Niro arguing with the CBP and ICE people at the airport. For all the normies, shut up and ask for a lawyer.
Practice/roleplay would help a lot of people. It is SO much harder than it sounds, especially the first time. People know intellectually that they shouldn't talk to cops, but if you're not prepared, you can run your mouth before it occurs to you that you're doing it.
And then you have to overcome a ton of social conditioning that isn't even related to cops (it feels weird to refuse to answer a polite, ostensibly harmless question) in addition to the obvious anxiety (not wanting a bunch of armed guys to be mad at you). Rehearsal helps a ton

Friend CBP are federal cops. If you talk to them and don't luckily say something stupid you got lucky.
Hasan from the get go should have asked if he was being detained not waited 2 hours in to it.
One mistake in that conversation opens up No Fly Lists.
