Not to keep pushing my line of "There are two New York Cities" but we could elect the most anti-car mayor you can imagine and they would struggle mightily with a city council that was still dominated by outer borough members who think the city is supposed to be for cars.

It's something you don't realize until you start going to community board meetings. I'm four stops away from lower Manhattan on the A and when the DOT proposed an unprotected bike lane that wouldn't remove any parking, people still showed up to complain about a lack of parking.

Currently dealing with this along 31st in Astoria - bike lane will simply better organize the existing street infrastructure under the elevated trains (cars will park in line with the pillars instead of next to them; buffer lane, then bike lane against curb) and it's made 9 people virulently angry

And if you want to understand why Cuomo's so popular, people like that see people like me as a direct threat to their way of life and are happy to vote for someone who will stand up to me and the DOT. This gets wrapped up in a bunch of other stuff like gentrification, too.
