And it is totally wrong. People in the UK regularly go bankrupt, facing the choice between debilitating pain on NHS waiting lists or huge debts to pay privately.

Indeed, uk private medical costs are crazy high. Compare to Belgium which has one of Europe’s best health care systems. Regulated insurance and providers. Private Hospitals compete to give best service. Uk patients die due to late cancer diagnosis, poor screening + cheapest treatment pathways.
The article by Burn-Murdoch shows the percentage of GDP in each country towards medical debt, (how is that determined in UK?)
Britain is a third the size of the US, so the total indebted actual dollars going to bankruptcy in both cases would be helpful.
Sorry that's paywalled so can't read it. If it's trying to say that 1 in 14 households go bankrupt in the UK because of health costs I think it's most definitely wrong!
It stated that 1 out of 14 of the poorest households each year incur catastrophic medical debts, a term which they defined in their statistics. Many better off households these days have private insurance or can pay a lower 5 digit sum for e.g. eye or knee surgery.
Can you find the source of this data? I can't, not for the UK. In any case the original post said there are zero bankruptcies caused by private medical bills in the UK. You said this is incorrect, but have provided zero evidence of that. The original post was correct.
