The justification they're using is they are "dangerous," without proof, saying proof requires "disclosure of confidential government secrets." MAGAs aren't going to care about the cost. They will gladly sacrifice US tax dollars to punish brown people and "own the libs." MAGA are fascists, period.

There is literally no legal justification except "We said so." There is no evidence presented that these people are criminals. There were no hearings. There is no record of their immigration status as far as I can tell.

That's why this is terrifying: it is just a raw exercise of power.

I wonder what the UN has to say about keeping detainees imprisoned for life (wo due process) for the offense of seeking asylum in the US? I'm guessing that breaks multiple international laws. The US can kind of get away with it but small countries tend be held accountable sooner or later.
