Lancaster’s England team become known for just not having enough to take that final step. It’s the exact same now, England put themselves into a position that gives them a chance only for them to fall short. England could do worse than asking Lancaster to be involved, just not head coach.

Feeling very mixed on Eng coaches. On one hand, decent squad with talent, but feels 5-10% off realising their full potential; how much longer does Borthwick get to unlock the rest?

On the other hand, everything about English clubs recently suggests we may actually just be seeing our current level…

I think the England pack is/and always will be pretty competitive. How many of their current backs would get a spot in the lions xv though? Smith might just make the bench. He is behind Russell and Crowley/Prendegast imho.

It’s also worth asking, which player during Borthwick’s reign has played better for England than their club form.I cant think of any, which says a great deal about the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 coaching set up.The game plan just isn’t right for the playing group.We do what other sides do but do it slightly worse than them.

Borthwick is a line out coach, perhaps a forwards coach at best. Having Wiggy as attack coach, having not taken on Nick Evans, says so much. Joe El Abd as D coach is another example. He can’t cope with world class coaches who challenge him.

It's that which made Lancaster such a good pathways development coach. He's too honest and straight for boardroom politics or media mind games, basically the other side of a coin with gatland on it.

It's always been fairy clear too. Post England he basically said he didn't like all the non technical parts of the job. He's obviously talented, he brought on a new generation for England and did well at Leinster. Guys like Cheika, Gatland 1.0, Diamond though get a lot out of vibes and emotion.

Gatland 1.0 you wonder what happened when he went back to NZ that made him more a 1970s Dino than a self aware emotionally a psychologically switched on coach. Seems everything he says is contradictory reminds me of pivac (nice guy) and his media statements
