Principles comes out of philosophy and research. I also consider myself a behaviorist and I bring a lot of that into my thinking. A lot of my patents came from some new ways humans interact w/emergent tech. I wrote an article about Principles not too long ago.

I actually have been contemplating going back to school a bit to finish a second degree in Philosophy because it is so impactful. I took as many classes as I could during undergrad and feel like it comes up so often in my work.

Same with me. I took my electives in philosophy, and when I was in my twenties I contemplated leaving the world behind and becoming a Zen monk. I studied mindfulness for years. It’s given me a super observability power. I notice things others don’t.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you’re designing an ML feature that prioritizes customer support tickets based on urgency. What does urgency mean? Volume of negative sentiment? Revenue impact? Vulnerability of the customer? You need to clarify the philosophical foundations of the product decision.
