I don't get why people want Marner in Montreal. He would be very expensive, he's had trouble scoring in the playffs, he's solid defensively and he's feisty but he isn't big enough to be physical and if you're going to spend like that, at least get a proven centreman. - ThreadSky

100 point players don't grow on trees and there's a lot of talent here that can score in the playoffs so I'd hope we at least kick the tires on him. He'd help get us to the playoffs a lot more comfortably. That said all those negatives are valid and would rather splurge to get Bennett if possible

I'd never try to convert a wing to centre. It almost never goes well. If he does sign here we'd deal with having a ridiculous log jam at wing for a year and/or trade a very good winger for a 2C. 90-100 points is really hard to say no to even factoring in his position. That's a lot of points.

I don't think the Leafs let Marner walk. In the end, he's still a top winger in the league, and who will they replace 100 points with? I find it funny that Leafs fans crap on one of their own but give Matthews who has proven to be a playoff bust, a pass.

True. Asking Marner to accept a trade for Rantanen supposedly pissed him off but players have a way of forgetting things like that at contract time.

Marner is too small and soft for the playoffs. We seen that we need size and on toughness with skill, and we’ve witnessed years of failure in Toronto.

He can be successful, but needs to be surrounded by the same mix we are looking to add, so his fit is elsewhere.

It’s an interesting thought adding Marner, 100 point guys do not come along that often, I think just leaving Toronto would help in the playoffs, and we would make the playoffs for sure adding him, playing with these young studs we have would be something, but the MSL factor could make this work

There's no free agent in the league who is worth it at the price he will get, except maybe a McDavid, MacKinnon or Makar. He'd wreck their salary structure in one deal and for what? Might wreck their chemistry too. They will have to sign Hutson and Demidov long term. No way Hughes signs that guy.

I've been saying it for a few years now. The Leafs could go a long way towards solving their problems by getting rid of the rotten apple of Matthews. Yeah, he scores plenty but IMO, he and his ego are the biggest detractors to the Leafs becoming a real cohesive team.

I would have traded Matthews three years ago when his value was sky high. Some American team would have paid through the nose to get him and set the Leafs up. Now, he's priced out and exposed as a playoff underperformer.

This is going to be an interesting UFA season. Teams with cap space and not many legit stars. Marner will get paid this offseason, just not by the Habs (I hope). McDavid may be available in a year, the Leafs won't tie their hands overpaying for Marner. Maybe the Blackhawks?

As a lifelong Habs fan whose lived in Toronto for 30 years and watched the Leafs a lot, Marner in Montreal would be a HUGE mistake. He's a skilled and creative regular season player and needs out of Toronto, but Montreal should not for one second be considering this.
