Agreed. There are so, so many people I know who are doing incredible science communication. We have books in need of readers, podcasts in need of listeners, museums in need of visitors, social media accounts in need of followers. The effort has to come from both ends. - ThreadSky

This misdiagnoses the problem.

Universities and researchers are communicating hard. All the time.

But with the regime now controlling the most widely used news media and social media, it doesn’t matter. The communications channels just aren’t there.

It's demoralising and divisive to be told our hard work isn't correct or adequate. I suspect that's partly the point. I wonder if stress adds to this too? I've noticed with advice giving people are quicker to find a small fault and argue that than use and accept messages of support they asked for.

Let's not the internet was created so scientists could communicate.

It went from sharing brilliant ideas and research, to spewing lies and hate.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I searched the NIH website for information, I learned enough to know I needed a better doc.

Ah yes, the good old 'scientists really should try and communicate' canard. It comes round again and again and it's so painfully obviously false. Even before social media gave us a massive new platform, as you say there were always lots of people doing so much stuff through different kinds of media.

I've worked with quite a few scientists over the years and every single one of them was delighted for the opportunity to tell a new audience about their work. Anyone who thinks scientists are all about keeping their work secret has, well, just never met a scientist.
