How often are legislative elections? If the cons win more seats, does PM of opposition step down? I know I can google but that would be wading through all the bullshit answers the Internet gives us now. Merci for indulging me

In the case of yesterday's election, Pierre Poilievre (leader of the Conservatives) lost his own seat, but says he intends to stay on as party leader, assuming the party doesn't give him the boot. So another Con minister will have to serve as acting leader of the opposition in parliament.
If a party loses an election, the leader doesn't have to step down. They can stay on leader of the opposition. And as long as they win their own riding, they will still sit as a minister in parliament. They can even lose their seat and stay on as leader if the party doesn't turf them.
As per Elections Canada: "Each general election (GE) must be held on the third Monday in October in the fourth year following the previous GE." So unless a sitting gov't chooses to call an election (as was this case this time), or one is forced due to a vote of non-confidence, it's a 4 year term.
