One of the first mecha BL works shown at Comiket was from a rather large Grendizer FC. Daimos had such a massive community of both fujos and non-fujos "shipping" that Tadao Nagahama funded events where they could meet up and make friends. I don't think its fair to say the latter due to Gundam imo - ThreadSky

Fanservice has been both a large and subtle crux in mecha as a genre since its inception, even with SF anime. Creators of these shows understood and acknowledged that, opinions have changed time and time again, but there was a large community of both men and women discussing ships prior to Gundam.

There's a lot to discuss here in that subtlety and nuance were not lost on any of these fans considering the fanworks made and studio acknowledgements of their existence. Daimos in particular continued to have ship related works made well into 1987, I think that says a lot.

Are you aware of any other similar movement regarding Grendizer? I remember reading in some Japanese blogs of it having a similar scene cultivated - small variants of it even developed in pockets of the Levant and Italy too in the form of zines.

Absolutely. The official UFO Grendizer FC created an original slide animation (hand painted cels with voice acting done by members) that was screened for fans. This was a club recognized by Toei, too. This is a distinctly BL ship related work with Duke x Kouji

grendizer is way more explicit and imo it opened a lot of doors in mecha genre for fujos and bl culture that later reflected on gundam.
I mean, seriously it's a lot of bait and on purpose I would say... even I would've wanna write fics and make djs if I could 😅

With the J9 shows they saw a bunch of female fans for Braiger and then leaned into it for Baxingar. Some lady on pixiv uploaded her old Baxingar doujins and they're stunningly beautiful.

That's interesting! I have about three manuscripts from the artist REX in particular and they are really stunning. Many Aniparo artists created a ton for these, especially Ai Naniwa and Doronco. I need to get those up online.
