Even if we could solve the ethical and environmental issues, I fail to see how AI could ever amount to anything better than a novelty toy. It's hitting a brick wall and it's only so pervasive because people keep gassing it up. Why reclaim something with no use?

As far as I’m concerned, it’s not even workforce automation. I work in laboratories where automation saves us from repetitive motion injuries and allows us to focus on the more interesting parts of the job, like data analysis, study design, and troubleshooting.

Any form of automation should focus on making human lives better and safer. I don’t know where gen AI has any hope of doing that. I keep hearing about using it in medicine, for example, but it’s can’t be used in medicine because it can’t be validated. You can’t reproduce results.

It’s the generative part that kills it. Large language models are useful for low-stakes on the fly translation, the image models are useful for large scale image sorting and categorization, stuff like that, but not at the current environmental impact, energy cost, etc

An artist friend of mine recently made a post about how gen AI for thoughts / thinking (IE chatgpt, characterAI) concerns them much more than gen AI for art, and as another artist I couldn't agree more. Listening to regurgitated garbage lies is far more harmful in the grand scheme of things.

Literally a discussion had in my masters. It is a reductionist force boiling down art history, philosophy, and creative experience into “style”. Any incentive to create something unique is hampered because it’ll be scraped and added to the training set. Total Homogeneity is the end result.

I agree that it does lead to homogenization of art. Just ask a image generator to do “more X” where X can be anything and it’ll all end up in the same spirals/futuristic/dreamscape stuff regardless of subject.

I’m wondering if the language classification/translation usecases of models are similar.

Meaning it applies to any use. GenAI cannot create anything that is new, it’s just recombining things it’s been fed in training. This is a problem to begin with, but especially when the ingested data contains already-regurgitated output and the ingestion and prompts affect the relevance weighting.
