When I was a journalist, I looked at myself as a vital piece of democracy — part of the reason the first amendment was written.
Now, that may have been a little too self-important, but I fully believe in The Washington Post’s tagline “Democracy Dies in the Dark.”
Both feel increasingly mortal.

There’s just not enough local journalists left to cover natural disasters.
