I live in Wisconsin, but I know our neighbors in Minnesota will give you all the advice you'll need to stay toasty. Your kids will get a much better education. You'll have access to some of the best medical care in the world.

I took a trip to Maine a few months back just to scope the place out and inland Maine felt like Trumpland Texas but with nicer roads. Portland seemed like a cool place but I ran out of time so had to leave. I'll likely be exploring Massachusetts next as I hear schools and healthcare rock there.

And here in Texas, as a self employed individual on an ACA plan that costs 1700 for a family of four, our options are extremely limited when it comes to 'in-network providers'. Referrals take weeks... so a state with better healthcare would be a major plus!

I'm in Michigan (for now), and you adjust to the cold pretty quickly. Cold Midwest states also have amazing crafters who make great keep warm items like custom scarves, hats, beautiful quilts, etc. There is a ton of character and friendly support in most of the cold states.

I'm a lifelong Minnesotan. Get yourself a long down coat and you'll be fine. I walk to work, and it can be -30° with the wind chill I don't even feel it. Down coat, Sorel boots, wool socks, and a hat, mittens, and scarf. Plus a car battery with a lot of cold cranking amps.

Most houses are made for cold here. As a Minnesotan who has lived in southwest Texas, and has relatives there, the biggest complaint I actually hear whe they visited in the summer? “I can’t believe how hot it is here”
