Your major state University should have a master gardeners program that can help and answer gardening questions. They are paid by your tax dollars to advise people on native plants that are suitable for your area. This includes information on appropriate plants for a Victory Garden

I'm doing what little I can. For the past 5 years, I've put out extra veggie seedlings for the neighbors to take as they wish. Extra produce that I grow (and can't preserve) goes to two of our local food pantries. You should see their eyes when I bring in 3 bushels of fresh pears.

I had the same thought. So, I started looking for a good book. This is 3 volumes in 1. It is based from the PBS program, "The Victory Garden." On page 303 they sketch out different ways you can build one. I recommend using heritage seeds, so you can save seeds, if it should become necessary.

I began about five years growing tomatoes in pots. Now we have fruit trees, veg, herb, and pollinator plants.

Pig clubs were a common thing in the UK, a group would put together the $$ to buy a pig or two and everyone would contribute to feeding it. At slaughter, everyone who was part of the club would get meat.

Check out ration books from the war and post-war era, too. Tells you what'll be hard to find.

I read a study that said the reason the US needed victory gardens during WWII is that they rounded up and incarcerated all the Japanese farmers in CA and other western states and so food production plummeted.

Open-pollinated seeds require you to know how to sustain them. 1/ keep one pack for the next year 2/ learn which are biennials and let some stand after harvest 3/ learn how to preserve the parts that you can plant the following year 4/ you MUST have a four-year rotation for tomatoes to avoid disease

The Cooperative Extension Service in each state is excellent (if its funding survives). There are robust groups doing community gardens, food self-sufficiency, urban farming -- many of/for Black, immigrant, or Indigenous groups. Here in RI: FarmFreshRI, Southside CLT.
