“college as a work credential than a site of learning.” Absolutely. And the huge dip in liberal and fine arts, is another symptom. I majored in classical guitar and Renaissance lute and worked my tail off for learning’s sake. It’s helped me in all the areas of life, but it’s not quantifiable.

Really pisses me off (as a humanities grad). In the late 90s it was still a respected college option. It’s been bludgeoned by everyone since Obama (we need more women in STEM!) and the Silicon Valley bro unispeak.

I believe it! I’ve observed it many of the friends I’ve known. There’s a lack of layered thinking. I too majored in the liberal arts and (mostly) work in another field. The amount of creative problem solving I have to do is astounding. A lot of folks just mindlessly mimic big talkers on TV or online

We didn't have this when I was in college but I fear I would have turned to AI as well. We were required to take so many bullshit courses that had nothing to do with our majors (outside of the core-curriculum type classes, which get a pass IMHO).

Yes, I know. And also required to that we can keep the enrollment high enough to justify keeping a department of whateverness around for the people who do major in those classes.

I'm just pretty honest with myself about the fact that I'd have wanted to use ChatGPT in those classes myself.
