imo when making plushies there’s so much that can change fabric to fabric, a pattern can’t account for nuances in stretch and thickness that happen when you’re stuffing the material, which is def less of an issue in a quilt

Most of us long-time quilters don't follow instructions. Heck, a lot of us don't even use patterns! Don't let a few intimidate you!

LOL! My loose relationship with patterns is rooted in my impatience with instructions I can’t visualize, my tendency to march to my own beat, and my lack of polished skill! Sometimes good things spring from improvisation so keep on keeping on!

Just tell them you’re wanting to get into "improv quilting." You don’t need patterns or instructions for those! Also the quilt police do NOT exist and if you run across any, eff them. Make your stuff your way!

I was told early on not to listen to the "quilt police".
That said, I have found that pressing and squaring along the way makes hard things less hard.

in plushmaking you can kinda get by on "if it works it works" so I'm kinda like..... yeah the instructions sayyyyyy that but that's just a suggestion. Follow ur heart

I didn't even know there were rules to sewing until I was like.....4 or 5 years in 😂 I'm pretty sure I break all of them on a daily basis!

Instructions are like rules... made to be improved on, lol. My take is - if you start out making a log cabin block... and a log cabin block is what you end up with... then - all is good :D How you get there is up to you & what works for you!

It happens in art classes too... women of a certain age are all "am I doing this right?" Or even "am I allowed to do that?" Now that I'm that age I'm proud to still break all the quilting rules.
