I literally had people telling me in 2020 that I was being irresponsible and selfish for not cutting myself off entirely from all human contact until the virus had blown over. The GBD may not have been official policy, but it still did a great deal of harm.

Still, we need to debate these issues going forward IRL. During this pandemic, there has been so much pseudoscience that it's difficult to count from droplet to covidbrain to the whole complex masking debacle. Easier to criticize than to try and propose a strategy

The one clear error we made was ignoring regional incidence over time. We shut down the entire country at a time when COVID was very focused in particular geographies. Medical care and surgery that could have been delivered at virtually zero risk was forbidden in many places. MDs had nothing to do.

The biggest thing for me was GBD came out when vaccines were right around the corner (and we had a reasonably strong signal on this). It was a completely reckless proposal that would have been a massive wave of infection just months before vaccines started rolling out.

They argued that the death rate was orders of magnitude lower that it actually was, that at most ten or so thousand would die, that if we allowed it sweep through the “non vulnerable” population we’d have herd immunity in a matter of months. Please identify what in this is correct.
