I’ve always thought that most game journalists get way too much hate for simply doing their jobs tbh. Especially when it comes to reviews. Yeah some goofy ass articles get written for desperate outlets but that’s not exclusive to game journalism at all.

Honestly, the desire to “feel like Spider-man” is why I want to play the game so much. It’s one line in a review, not worthy of the backlash it received, and a good signal that the game prioritised the right thing; The Amazing Spider-man games lacked that feel for me

The point of the memes was to mock the lack of original thought and effort, as well as the perception that games journalists would rather push out a shoddy incomplete review rather than finish the game.
That said, the memes thus spawned were equally lacking in original thought and more annoying.

Part of the review embargo that's standard to every single review copy I've ever received was signing an NDA that says what we could or couldn't talk about, and many of those literally have "You can't talk about anything past the first X hours/chapters" clauses.

I get that, but from the viewpoint of the consumer, the product (review) is compromised. The end result is a bunch of samey looking day-one reviews that cannot compare to the long form content put out by most creators on YT (whose audience where the mockery comes from, mostly)

The game is about putting you in the shoes of Spider-Man and it was really good at doing that and a bunch of reviewers all coming to that conclusion independently should’ve been taken as a huge mark of quality!!!!!!!!!!

This is what I dislike about those kind of snide remarks. Critics and journalists are writing for a broad audience, and that's a legitimately useful description of the game's merits that anyone can understand. Most people aren't always-online obsessives.

It's been said, but popular quotes will take off as fact. I don't like the star wars prequels but I've heard more people quote Plinkett memes to express their distaste than learn to form an opinion. It's just unfortunate this intellectual laziness ends up being more consequential than you'd expect.
