I'm a fan of the Pillars of Eternity model of "the gods are real and they are fucking assholes" but then they had to go and make priests one of the best classes. And I can't even make a priest devoted to the one god in the series that's generally pretty chill (Hylea). - ThreadSky

I dispute the read that the gods are real a bit. There are certainly powerful entities that call themselves gods.

And much as I'd like to make an exception for Hylea, not sure I can overlook the fact that breaking a promise with her at the end of PoE1 results in her inflicting The Birds (1963) on Dyrwood.

Granted I think the "you broke your promise with [insert deity]" endings might be non-canon even if you go down that route, it seems weird that any of those could've happened between games without anyone in PoE2 mentioning it.
If it's non-canon, the worst she does is "birds pooped on your boat."
