Having forward progress but allowing the offensive players to push another player forward is nonsensical. Disallowing that makes sense. Otherwise you should get rid of forward progress and allow the defense to drag the ball carrier backwards.

I don’t completely disagree. However, the reason why they got rid of the rule is it’s extremely difficult to call on the field, so the implementation is going to be a disaster trying to figure out if the lineman who pushes is pushing the defender of the ball carrier

I’d rather have them try to officiate it then have the offense be able to push or ball carrier into the end zone while the defense cannot do it.

Good! It’s very simple for an offensive player to not push the ball carrier. In fact it’s probably the easiest thing for an offensive player to avoid doing since it’s unnatural to do so.

Let's not ignore it got to the point where the officials threatened to grant PHI a TD.

I don't recall a bunch of GL offsides due to hard counts causing officials to threaten granting the offense a touchdown. Perhaps I've missed that.

Yup! But the last time that penalty was called was 1991 because officials determined that it’s nearly impossible to officiate that rule properly, so in 2005 the decided to get rid of the rule since it was inconsequential to the game!

It was inconsequential until teams made it part of designed plays. The part they found difficult in 2005 was differentiating pushing the ballcarrier vs someone in contact with the ballcarrier.
