Carrot is sweet and pure - but it’s also more or less explicitly stated that Carrot’s instincts, if left unchecked, would lead to a reign of terror. Like, keeping a lid on Carrot is possibly one of the most important jobs that Vimes has.
I don't think we know for sure (though there might be some hints in Men At Arms that I've forgotten) - but if he's truly royalty, I'd guess that he was probably born out of wedlock? Royal families are more likely to lose track their illegitimate children than their legitimate ones!
I always thought his point was that he was the literal fated heir, which is why he's got a sword and all. Fairytale vibes and everything. I suppose he could be a fated heir even if born out of wedlock, but somehow I don't see it
I just also think that this is one of the times where Pratchett played fantasy straight without twisting it (the Twist comes later) so I think it's interesting to talk about. In an autistic sense. Y'know.
