After 8 years in a new city and at the age of 45, I started a book club to force myself to go out and try to meet people. Purposely focused the club around leftist books and theory to ensure I met likeminded people and it really helped.

Yes! To be honest, more of us need to make new third spaces on our own initiatives rather than waiting around for others to do it, or for new friends to appear from nowhere.
I think society would be better for it if we all thought about how to congregate in place of traditional third spaces.
Started from scratch - I literally knew no one in my city other than my wife and kids (self-employed, work from home). Started with a post on my town's subreddit and went from there.
