And if you were unaware these could even be alive on the ground in vanilla Dark Souls, welcome to the club. The behavior that makes them stick to their tree forever seems unintentional.
So the only way to realistically see them on the ground is attacking them with a long range weapon that doesn't do enough damage to kill them, or an attack/skill that knocks them over.
