Sometimes i listen to BBC World Service radio to just listen to the beautiful British accents not knowing or caring what they are talking about at all.

Those in Yorkshire aren't easy. My maternal grandfather,Will, who was from Whitby, lived in London for more than 50 yrs and I still couldn't understand a thing he said until about 10 minutes later when I could sort of string things together.😂
I used to think the same thing driving across the prairie at night listening to the bounce signal of AM radio. Wondering how stupid do you have to be to believe this crap. I now know how stupid they have to be.
Please don't just share on this forum. Tell your reps in DC what you think. Resist. It only takes a few minutes and best of all..it doesn’t cost any money.
We don’t need money in politics. We just need people to participate.
I listen to BBC World Service mostly because their reporting of US events seems much more neutral than any coverage within the States. I love MSNBC but sometimes I realize I’m in a vacuum. Also the accent. 😄
Sorry but I watch British TV just for the same reason .Not that there are not some great shows here.Tired of making money for " the man" the rich and trump will kill us all .Too pissed off to watch anymore.
Most likely Posh English...thy r the ones that stamp on the poor, starve little children and don't pay tax etc...it's all very deceiving...posh Eng accents gets' them respect whr it mainly & most certainly is not warranted.
Unfortunately they often talk about stuff to worry about that you didn't know about before. I'm hesitant to encourage my anxiety to find even more branches on which to roost.
If it was a politician it's highly likely they didn't know what they were talking about either or care very much what the consequences might be. Sound familiar?
In the 90s this was the only English radio channel available in India. I used to wonder why their English is so different than that taught at my school.
I’m one of those weirdos that sometimes listens to the British shipping weather forecast because the monotone and arcane wording with a British accent is somehow very relaxing.
If you subscribe and get the BBC Sounds app, you can hear the Sleeping Forecast. Shipping forecast over classical calming music. Drug free sleeping pills for your ears. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p0cjyk2w
In a similar vein I sometimes watch CNN listen to grating American accents murdering the English language, not knowing what they're talking about either.
I studied abroad in college and tailed him for several blocks through London streets until I could stage an “accidental” run-in with him buying a newspaper. He signed a travel guide I had in hand, and tapped me on the shoulder, saying “Only because you’ve been following me for so long.” 😬 🤦🏻♂️
You do realise the cessation of the transmission of BBC radio 4 is one of the criteria for the UK’s nuclear submarines to open the letter of last resort …
Me too Ben, actually a good source of genuine news. I am an American in London, the main news BBC sadly is not that trustworthy anymore according to a lot of the Brits 😎✈️
There is a campaign to dispose of the BBC, by the same people who want to scrap the NHS. At the same time the left blames it for everything.
The same thing happened in the USA with MSM. Everyone cried wolf, everyone undermined it. Trump harnessed that and now - WaPo is an empty shell, like CNN,
It’s only the right wing of our politics who argue the BBC isn’t trustworthy tbf - they don’t like the objectivity and fact checking and constantly attack the organisation and undermine support for its funding.
Ok, that’s fair I guess - sometimes feels like overbalance I agree - though compared with our print media and the likes of GB news it still feels nearest to fair - excepting channel 4 news which does a great job too 😁
From the world of sport, the Cointon Spinkywhompers flumped the Floingboing Welfencloppers, 70-fluff to 40-flave. At the tone, the time will be 26 railroad.
I get that you’re being apolitical and all, but it would be nice if someone with your reach and renown would comment occasionally on the state of the US/world.
I do the same with @democracynow.org to listen to Amy Goodman’s beautiful American accent.
The difference is that I do care about what she is talking about.
You know they’re speaking English, right? The comprehension part should come pretty easily. It’s not like you’re listening to French radio or something.
I LOVE the cricket scores because I know absolutely nothing about cricket. It sounds like: "Wellingsford topped North Shandy with six aglets for the Tum tum pop. In international cricket New Zealand hosts Pakistan challengers winning 22 over 17 in the first match with Hiddskiddle twisting 7 wickets"
I use the BBC and AL Jazeera to get legit international news, balanced with the AP for domestic. Our US media is so feed now with people like Bezos buying the Post, etc.
Sometimes, I call my lovely friend from Ireland just to hear her accent. It's a bonus if she's excited or pissed or she uses many words that start with a T or Th.
I've watched a great deal of Fox News, and of the BBC, and your statement is just not true. BBC is constantly under attack from the right (to whom its independence is an affront, and who want a Murdochised replacement), and from the left (who lazily blame it for everything they don't like).
The BBC is much more subtle than Fox. And it’s more liberal. But it is propaganda. I don’t watch it now. It got too bad. To twits defending it, look at the coverage of the forever wars. And if you have to offer an idiot product for the proles, where
Was the quality in depth debate? Nowhere in sight.
It used to be that if you were curious, and lucky enough, to catch the OU social science stuff at 4am, that was an education. Chomsky revelations of empire and politics. I think that’s gone now.
Why would it be biased? They aren’t controlled by advertisers or the government. The only reason for the existence of BBC News is to report the news without bias. What is the point of them doing otherwise? What have they got to gain? Without a motive you have no case.
They have this obsession with ‘balance’. The problem with this is that if every single economist points out that (eg) Brexit is a bad idea that means they have to hang around the shops in Stoke so that they can broadcast a ‘balancing’ opinion. Which is that it’s brilliant and we should just leave
There were some interesting pieces this year (I think from Jeremy Bowen) when they explained that actually no, they don’t strive for balance, just the truth. For example if Trump said something that was clearly a lie, then they wouldn’t have to achieve balance in challenging that lie.
Would you say you were hard yes or hard no or sitting on the fence in that vote? I’d suggest if hard yes/no that would have coloured what you saw. If it was biased then surely the Yes/No campaigns would have taken them to court?
I’m 52. I watched the BBC every day for years. It’s propaganda. I am stunned how bad it is now. It used to be more subtle. ‘Golly gosh, the news your boss wants you to hear. Move along proles’. The last straw for me was Iraq. The BBC tried to push back, so New Labour replaced its director.
Sometimes the vet interrupts me while I'm explaining my cat's explosive diarrhea to ask me where in England I'm from and coo over my accent. A 911 operator did it too...
It amuses a friend from Cheshire now living in the US when Americans go gaga over his accent. He always maintains its the equivalent of a country American southern accent. I gather he got looked down for it by some.
When I lived in America I knew that the first thing I said to people would have to be repeated cos they weren’t listening to what I said; just trying to work out the accent. I’m a proper Bristolian so it’s very ooh arrrrr.
Ugh, the ignored first sentence.
Me: "Hello 911, I'm calling to report a downed power line"
Them: "OMG, I LOVE your accent! Where... are you from?"
Always cracks me up when they don't feel confident enough to say the country. I had one guy say "London, that's near Paris, right?"
Hah yep! Had someone say “let me guess - you’re either from Melbourne or Sydney”! The funny thing is there are no regional accents in Australia (so I’ve been told by numerous Australians).
LOL! When my family moved to the states,we got that a lot. I was 10 and of course kids made fun so I quickly became "americanized".Now wish I had my Englishness back, although I pick it up quickly when visiting.
For years I fell asleep listening to it on WUOM in MI. Now we’ve moved, and the schedule is a bit wonky, so not listening as much. But you are right, it is peaceful! Have you tried the Sleeping Forecast? It’s the shipping forecast overlaid with other peaceful things.
You can't trust BBC either. They suppress stories about Palestine and report literal Israeli propaganda. They've even warned or dismissed employees for protesting against that.
A pretty young woman who speaks with a proper English accent makes my knees weak. I could listen to her talk for hours. I also think the BBC does a better job covering America than our own news media does.

something that American "journalists" apparently think is illegal or something.

Somebody needs to explain the importance of having one to my wife because she's not getting it, no matter how much slower and louder I say it to her.

You need to wait till the end before Ms Maitlis says thank you...
Love the BBC podcasts for lulling me to sleep!
I find the accent so peaceful, I even have Siri using it.
I hope some knowledge downloaded into my brain every night.
😄
Desert Island Discs is the one. Every British trait there to behold.
The difference is that I do care about what she is talking about.
The most un-stressful piece of cricket commentary ever!
