I take it there’s no cd protection on the games? Cdrs do a decent job?

And yeah, I just used a generic USB CD/DVD burner with Maxell bank discs writing at 8x (which is the slowest the burner can handle), and no problem

No protection but it is region locked. I have ordered a Japanese BIOS which should be able to play any game.

What did you use to paint the metal? Just some varnish?

The shields are chrome paint for metal, and I made sure the ground contacts are sanded. I have also used galvanised zinc spray in the past which is conductive. The lid spring is just outdoors metal spray paint in light gray

The console came in quite a sorry state, with plenty of rust visible from the outside. Once inside, it got much worse...

First thing was to check the fuse, and guess what, it was blown. So I replaced it, and after that, the console did turn on.

I burnt a CD and tested it with a Mega Drive 2. The CD was making a terrible noise. I later learnt that this was caused by a switch that detects when the laser reaches the end of the disc not working properly. Just a case of cleaning and putting some Deoxit on it.

I also disassembled the various cogs, cleaned up the old grease and applied new one.

Once operation was confirmed, I proceeded to clean up the whole console. That meant full disassemble of the CD cover mechanism and a good wash

The spring that hold the CD lid open was really rusty. I put it in white vinegar to loosen the rust, sanded it, and painted it with metal protecting paint.
