so `podman` (build, run) defaults to being incredibly slow unless you have `fuse-overlayfs` in PATH.
when you _do_ install `fuse-overlayfs`, you also have to remove some files it created in ~/ to get it to switch storage backends 🙃

But overlay driver was incompatible with vfs, so one had to wipe podmans storage to switch, and they didn’t do it automatically.
… and I had an installation older than that, and found out in July 2024
