Lots of talk about how social democracy is in decline, but the collapse of mainstream centre-right parties is just as big a story, and plausibly the main source of the rise of the far right.

But yeah, on theoretical grounds what suppresses Authoritarian parties is that people don't trust them - even people whose values align heavily.
... is that there was a Cold War.
As soon as the Cold War ends, those coalitions - particularly the centre-right one - become a lot less cohesive.
Post mauerfall, I think you can see a slow transition back towarwds "normal non-war time" politics where you can vote for the party that aligns with your values w/o imm dramatic conseq.
