The DOJ is under the executive branch. There is nothing in the constitution that says the president can't direct the DOJ's actions. It's just been done that way to avoid the appearance of corruption and impropriety. Trump and Republicans are openly corrupt, they don't care how it looks.

By stopping the AG from following the law, they are preventing the law from being properly executed.
