It just has general bullshit in its design... such as levels with a lot of verticality, and it's easy to get knocked down to the ground floor. In one stage, the second half is reached by scaling a tall platforming section, and you can easily get knocked down and have to do it all again. Plus,

if you die and continue from the middle of the stage, you have half the time that you would have had at the start of the stage... yet if you continue from the middle, but get knocked down to the ground floor, then you have to do the full stage in half the time. It's fucked up

The first one I've beaten, and it's pretty good. The second game has some real bullshit in its design though... like how taking damage gives i-frames, but you also can't pick up items while you have i-frames. So you can be unable to get a health item, and just keep getting hurt over and over
