i've been wracking my brain for solutions and they really did write themselves into a corner. this game hinged on solas needing to be redeemed (for some reason?) so every decision was centered around that instead of player autonomy. i think that's the linchpin in all of this. - ThreadSky

if you actually let solas be the villain and have a bigger role guiding you through the Solas Simulator 9000™ you create the necessary tension that E&G could never bring because they aren't grounded characters. their motivations are not reasonable or understandable as villains.

so, let solas be the antagonist you're fighting for control against. do it fully. let players decide what to do about him and let it develop the whole time instead of getting some gimmicky last-minute shock reveal.

let me feel like an active participant in the struggle against manipulation.

also, slapping a character creator on your protagonist and calling it a day is not role playing. you actually have to follow through on letting players build rook's life and identity. it's like the DM telling you who your character is every D&D session. there is no point to RP with no autonomy.

the thing origins did right was allow us to get a feel for who the warden was in the context of the world, and it served as the hook for how/why you ended up with the wardens in the first place. i imagine the game would not have worked with a veilguard-style "you did all of this offscreen".

and if you're giving us an origin/background, let us develop a connection to it. give us reasons to care about the faction.

give us reasons to care about anything, period.

like, every single decision we've made for 15 years was thrown in the trash for this. give us a reason to care about why.
