Watching you ink like old Italian men watching construction work. Just beautiful! Love when you can find ways to make the work you do count for more than before.
used to have some of his comics, but then I found out about *that* (also some nasty comments on trans people on pv fb profile I think ? can't remember exactly)
this is probably kind of a weird answer, but early jack kirby?? going back and reading all the first runs in the 60s of fantastic four, x-men, avengers etc is like...kind of freeing i guess haha. it's not my style per se but he honestly did so LITTLE in the way of bg back then and yet it does convey
i've also been enjoying elsa charretier's work in love everlasting. it's very like. minimal, never distracts from the characters or action, yet still evocative
Ooooo yeah i really love the look of these! I also definitely see the influence on you haha. Thanks im definitely adding this to my study pile. I think adding more spot blacks to my backgrounds will help a lot
lmao, i actually didn't find elsa's work until a couple of months ago, believe it or not?? i'm so inspired though!! but yeah more blackspotting in my backgrounds has been a gamechanger for sure
Flipping through Inuyasha atm and Takahashi sensei does amazing work with mostly minimal to no backgrounds with the occasional high detailed one to set a scene. For me, I go with one or two panels of background a page at least, tones or white for others. Unless the scenery is the main character ^_^
Honestly, Calvin & Hobbes is one that lives in my collection of touchpoints for minimalistic vignette-y props and backgrounds smashed together with OUTRAGEOUSLY gorgeous full scenery panels when so inclined
My frequent issue is that i normally study manga artists who often have assistants to help do backgrounds and a single person cannot reasonably do that haha.

I'm so glad I switched to it too!
