I've seen some liberals earnestly argue that rhetorical concessions on youth healthcare or youth sports would get Republicans to back off on other trans civil rights issues.

This is a complete misreading of Republicans. They want trans people to suffer and force them out of public life.

They think that they're respecting Connolly's lifetime of service. They see it as fairness in a seniority based leadership system. And Gerry Connolly was a good Congressman, he voted for progressive causes his whole life.

But Seniority, symbolism, norms aren't important in an emergency.
