The electoral college meant they only got the actual presidency 5 of those times and the scotus picks lined up so that they were shut out of far more power than they had *earned* in a small d democratic sense.

It's the system that causes the problem.
If you had rank choice voting, you would get more middle of the road politics.
So the system is broken that's why you've got Americans stuck in conservatism unlike the rest of the world.
This! It's a sclerotic system that was (literally) revolutionary for 1787, but is completely outdated compared to most other democracies in the year 2024. Plus the fact that it was built around keeping the peace between states in 1787, not around modern needs. Not fit for purpose today.

He tries to explain on TV the presenters shut down they don't want to know.
The founding fathers never wanted a democracy, We The People was actually We The Body Politic!
Here in Australia our middle of the road politics would be considered progressive.
And in many countries it's the same.
Your system isn't concerned about the middle of the road.
They appeal to extremes and seven states.
100% it is compared to other countries your system only appeals to far left and far right the middle of the road are forgotten.
In most countries middle of the road is most people.
No wonder so many feel disenfranchised.
Absolute b*******.
They completely forgotten.
How come when the politicians only go to seven states they don't even advertise in the rest of the states.
Why doesn't everybody vote.
Because they think they're vote doesn't count.
What you need to explain is why Biden voters stayed home & what were their demographics? If they had voted, she would have won & so that would make us decidedly not conservative.
And what was up with the bullet voting in swing states? HOW was that encouraged/promoted and to who? It caused his win.
There is a trend to vote conservative nationally but Dem for state races. This is because state politics don’t lean in as much on culture war issues and identity politics it’s about kitchen table issues and Dems win on those when their message doesn’t get distorted.
I actually think that the past three decades of continually *trying* to give Democrats the ball and their inability/unwillingness* to run with it, is a big part of Trump's two wins.
*Balance these however it makes sense to you, it doesn't really matter.
Trump’s popular vote was 1.2% more than Kamala’s. Half the nation, including many Dems, Independents, and of course Conservatives need CHANGE—even at the cost of their moral lines. People are struggling… The wealthy are getting richer. In 3 years we’re going to see people ‘really’ mad. Just wait.
I never understood why democrats are label liberals. I as a democrat believe in conservative government of no waste. Why is that Republican considered social problem as liberal. Isn’t helping thy neighbors a Christian value most of share one way or other.
Plus gerrymandering in the House, and the way Senate seats are distributed, etc. The entire game is tilted in favor of conservative interests, which is entirely deliberate given that the Constitution deliberately overrepresented slave states. We're still living with the consequences of that.
It's crazy that equal votes per jurisdiction is literally banned at the state and local level for being unrepresentative, but is enshrined at the federal level bc the founders wrote it into the Constitution. Both the EC and Senate would be unconstitutional if implemented in any state! Awful system.
Plus the Senate malapportionment--IIRC the last time Republican Senators represented a majority of the actual population was sometime in the early 2000s.
"America is a pretty conservative place!". Culturally yes....Economically? Not really. People hate the level of inequality we have in this country. Time for someone to try running on an extremely simple economic platform based on material benefits.
It's pretty provincial and issue dependent but in totality I would have to disagree. Other than abortion and a begrudging acceptance of gay marriage by many, we're a pretty reactionary culture. Even among dem voters. Reactionary thinking is hallmark conservatism.
If we are not going to use the intelligence we have gathered about Trump's compromised relationship with Putin right now to defend our nation, when are we going to use it? Never?
But this is not good for democracy. The fact those who identify as *conservative* are comfortable with installing a dictator & stripping away constitutional liberties is not due to being conservative. It's due to propaganda & a deep misunderstanding of our Constitution. It's our job to rectify that.
I'll absolutely love how you always find these kinds of uncomfortable historical truths, Chris. Thanks so much for so carefully explaining the facts you work so hard to find. Ha, comments indicate the squirmy discomfort! People are still trying to heal, but keep going Chris.

It benefits politicians.
And in many countries it's the same.

Is it that America is actually too conservative, or that the Democrats are incompetent?
This, and many other takes, fail in the face of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. In a country with high femicide and Catholicism, a Jewish woman won easily.

It’s why does Trump ever get more than 30M votes?
Make Biden #DeclassifyTrump, so we can force the Congress to #ImpeachTrumpNow.
