In order for the boys to be back in town, there's got to be a jailbreak somewhere in the town. There's gotta be trouble that you're gonna find yourself in.
I remember once in an Irish pub the barman would not put on this song for me even though the evidence of the boys being in town was clear for anybody to see. Said he didn't have it while pretty obviously running music off spotify.
For me, the song was always a story about a specific group of boys being back in town - a group I was not included in. I was never so presumptuous or self-important to picture myself as being one of the boys returning to the town.
"the boys" is gender neutral tbh. like dude. everyone's a dude, he's a dude, she's a dude, i'm a dude. it's the energy that you bring with you that brings out the boys being back in town. just rowdy energy.
Personally I always thought it as gender neutral in a weird way. Like it definitely fits best with men but if I saw a group of cis women playing and vibing along to it I wouldn’t think it was weird. “I guess the boys are back in town then”
"The boys" in reference to hanging out with friends or when talking about the song is a kind of mindset, not necessarily descriptive of their gender or sex or whatever it is.
I'm terrible at knowing the difference, you know what I mean.
The boys, they're back in town, and that's all that matters - some, never left physically, but are now back in town, while others, left some time ago, have returned. Regardless, they're back in town now, present, and making their presence known.
Wondering if the boys ever had been to the town in the first place tbh. Seems fishy. Very boy-ish to go like "Of COURSE I'd been to town, and I'll def go there again, I'll even have someone SING about it."
This is exactly the same as when I’d get upset about Casper saying “gimme four” in the Casper movie. He has four fingers, but everyone else has five, he can still ask for someone to give him five.
Fun fact: a town here in the West Midlands has a statue of Phil Lynott. Because despite being Irish, his mom stopped off for a few seconds to pop him out in the local hospital while on a trip.
In my early 20s, a co-worker said this to me (in reference to spring training starting and baseball teams coming to eat at our restaurant). My whole life, I had thought it was a myth. But in that moment I finally understood, the boys really were back in town 🥲
Boygenius already demonstrated the ecstasy of the boys (gender nonspecific) being back in town. Much like dudes rock, or girls night, you need only embody the spirit.
it has been widely understood that people of all genders can in fact be “one of the boys”; therefore “the boys” is gender neutral. thank you for coming to my ted talk
Wherever Johnny is getting slapped, they will be back in town. Wherever the old men are driven crazy, they will be back in town. Wherever a black Irishmen transcends and redefines an entire genre of rock, they will be back. Also when the nights are getting warm.
i really get the impression from that song's vibes that the boys are not a gender exclusive group, that some of the boys aren't boys but what they all share is that they're back in town
