Having a hard time determining if A-bishops chose to continue the notion of a ministry of the periphery (since US has isolated itself so completely) or are a little skittish about the future of their charitable status in the US. Thoughts?
Trump was delighted when he heard the new pontiff would like to be addressed as 'Pop Leo'. "I told the last guy there was too much formality at the Vatican -looks like they listened to me"
Pope Leo sounds very much like Pope Francis, so I hope that means he will not move the church backward in ideology. But at least hold ground. One can also hope for forward too, of course!
The NYT Is also afflicted with USA illiteracy and ignorance. It came as a prerequisite for survival in the trump era...too lazy to even use google. Time for AI to do the news I think.
Sweet Potato Hitler tweeted that it is a great honor that the new Pope was American-born. But he doesn't understand the subtle dig: he's American-born but he's not YOU.
No, it is not the first american Pope, he's the second. Francis was the first. Please check the maps and look for Argentina. It is AMERICA. What a problem you have!
Not everyone is excited about the new Pope. Rik Devillé, who defends victims of abuse in the church, finds his appointment “A slap in the face" Prevost has protected a priest who abused children for years.
“It’s unbelievable, the whole world is cheering, but the victims are not.”
No it doesn't
"Italian is the official language of Vatican City and is the language used for all official matters. Italian is also the lingua franca"
We don't translate Donaldo Trumpo in Italian, names are not to be translated
The last pope was Francis for the English speakers, Francesco for the Italians, Francziszek for the Polish and Franziskus for the Germans.
Each country has and will refer to the pope in their language.
So, yes it very much is.
This a publication in the USA, where we refer to our country as America. There are the continents North America and South America. Or collectively called The Americas. But in the USA, "America" had always been used, for well over two hundred years, to refer specifically to the USA.
But whatever you might say, America is not just a name of your country. It's the name of the continent that you are a part of. - you're the United States ... of the continent America.
Much of the World is taught that North America and South America are two separate continents. Which is where the confusion comes in. We refer to them together as "the Americas" sometimes. Meaning North and South (and Central) https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/Continent/
Your appeal to ignorance holds no substantial argument. Simply because your understanding of the world is so limited. Doesn't mean you get to decide what part of the world is called America
To be specific, Argentina is in South America, and America is in North America. But given that Canada and Mexico are also in North America, it makes sense to call the United States America, or of course simply the United States.
I get that descriptions might differ by language. “American” is a well known English description of people from USA. In the USA folks tend to describe themselves by state & get criticized overseas when we naturally say things like “I’m from Maryland”.
Then start socializing it. Begin describing every person from USA as United Statesian. You know that’s one of the ways language changes & develops, right?
Interesting to think what works there. I usually do long form "US citizen" or that sort, but I've heard Usaian and now United Statesian, although without the "of America" are we sure there aren't other united states of elsewhere we might be referring to? It's a tricky one.
We don’t have another term. I understand why calling USA citizens “Americans” could be bothersome for those who live in the Americas, but we literally don’t have another term for our nationality.
Most of the world uses the 7 continent model. In that model there is no such continent called America. There is a North/South America and collectively they are called Americas, but just America singular would refer to the country in this model.
Argentinian people don’t generally refer to themselves as “Americans.” People often refer to residents of the United States of America as “Americans” because it’s the only country that had “America” in its name.
Sorry man, but that's just not true:
1. Argentinians do identify themselves as americanas, the same as mexicans and very american from the Americas.
2. Only english speaking people in America refer to USA people as 'americans' regardless of the lack of imagination in the name
You call yourself what you do, and I wouldn't dream of telling you otherwise. Don't tell me what to call myself, or my country. And don't mistake for the kind of idiot who thinks the Gulf of Mexico has had its name changed.
It's a tradition for Popes to pick a name used by previous Popes. The last one was Leo XIII so this one being the next Leo he's Leo XIV. The first Pope who had the name Leo was in the 5th century.
The new Pope seems likeable. Since he's from the US, I hope he can appeal to the Trump administration's conscience. The plans for Greenland, in particular, are despicable.
South and North America ARE the SAME continent.. They are not separated. And it's not about colloquially, it's aboit the correct way.. Not the USA entitlement.
There are different definitions for the number of continents of the world. According to a few websites I checked most English speaking countries teach the 7 continent model: Australia, Asia, South America, Africa, Europe, and North America, and Antarctica
May he lead with the same love and warmth Francis had. May he open his arms to all those struggling; including lgbqt and the victims of the Ukraine and Palestinian war
Question for everyone saying “American” is used inappropriately in this headline. If citizens of the USA are not referred to as “Americans”, then what are we called?
I have been informed that many call citizens of the USA “Yankees” and I’m not opposed to it. Yes the NY Yankees are the devil but “Yankee” is also a term for the Union soldiers that fought to end American slavery.
In the US, "America" only means the USA. and "American" only refers to people from the USA. Whether other countries follow that same nomenclature is a separate topic. This is an American publication following American conventions.
Not pedantic. USians want to define Americanness by excluding all other American states, that they consider inferior, if they consider them as countries at all. Other Americans do not like this equating of Americanness with the US and they are right to object to it.
FYI - the official title of the US is The United States of America. For 250 years the nation has commonly been referred to as USA or the US or the States, or in short, … America.
I find it interesting that JD Vance visited the Vatican just days ago, and now a USA Pope. Was a little money "donated" to the church? How much is/will Leo be aligned with MAGA? Stay tuned.
Going be fun watching all these American Catholics who support felon Trump twisting themselves into pretzels hating on poor & desperate immigrants, while supporting a Pope who follows the words of Jesus when comes to poor refugees.
Unfortunately:
"Lopez de Casas says Prevost, a Dolton native who directly oversaw New Lenox Providence Catholic in leadership roles for the Midwest Augustinians from 1998 to 2014, covered up for McGrath, allowing him to prey on students for more than a decade before his ouster in 2017."
In 2000, Prevost allowed Father James Ray, an Augustinian priest, to reside at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago. Ray was suspended from public ministry due to credible accusations of sexual abuse of minors. Although the priory was close to an elementary school, Prevost didn’t notify the school admin
These churches are so yesterday. People are leaving, donations will cease. The all male dominated churched will cease to exist. There's a new church on the horizon that will truly show the love of God and the true meaning of Christ. A great awakening is coming.

Why are good people and programs demonized seemingly so easily?
Pope Leo is a good person! So, inevitably, why will he be vilified by The Church?

The first American Pope was Francis.
America is much more than USA.
Do you need any map?
And his personal words of greeting were in Spanish, not English.
The "Gulf of America" might have been appropriate if everyone knew the difference between US and America.

The entire western hemisphere is America, and Pope Francis was first.
Please understand that this is a facet of our language, just how Finland is "Suomi" in Finnish.

He won’t be interested in renaming the Gulf of Mexico I’m sure.
He’s got 1.4 billion Catholics to guard under his wing.
Apparently he's the most hated man in the Vatican, too.
