I'm sure the paper's lawyers told them that the richest man-baby in the world would probably sue them to oblivion if they said he killed babies, so they wimped out.

That's a strange thread. You could argue the quotes aren't necessary because it's very clearly Gates's assertion, not the paper's. The argument that they're not needed because the statement is factually accurate is odd.
