The example I use to explain it to other men is this - "If you go to see your Grandmother and you watch your language and don't make sexual jokes, is your Grandma censoring you? Or are you just showing respect to her personality." For some reason invoking Grandma helps them understand the concept.

I have personally witnessed race and gender based hiring and promotion bias and I hated it.
I can’t tell you which races and genders were preferred and which discriminated against or you’ll get angry with me.
