That happens before the final approach. A plane coming in already that low would have a much more difficult time. Obviously the precise timeline matters, but once it's that low it has flaps and everything deployed slowing it down. You cant initiate a turn like that. - ThreadSky

Actually you can, and it’s quite common. In this instance the change in runway was given prior to crossing the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, about six miles from the airport. VASAviation has the comms overlaid with radar track if you’d like to see.

Of course they can (done it numerous times). Simply add power, level off, turn, & fly a curved path to the equivalent spot for the new rwy. A bit awkward but safe.

There is a point where it's too late to make the turn & you need to go around, but at a busy airport that maneuver has its own risks.

The fateful plane was on approach to rwy 01. Likely a plane ahead was slow clearing the rwy or a jet was cleared to take off from rwy 01 (someone can check) so the plane was asked to land on rwy 33. As per the airport map, the position of the rwys makes this a relatively easy (& common) procedure.

There was a preceding landing to 33, and then once JIA5342 was cleared to 33 they cleared a takeoff from Runway 01. You can actually see the departing aircraft in the video just before the impact.
